Culture and History

The historic discoveries in this area go back to the year 2000 BC and lead us to an archaeological journey of great interest. We find from paleolithic and neolithic remains to Roman ones and even Moresque architecture samples.

 

a. The Roman city of Pollentia 123 BC Alcudia.
Visiting the old Roman town of Pollentia can not be missed. It is located outside the old town of Alcudia and it is consisted of the forum, the two treasure’s house, a Roman theatre and an aercheological museum. During excavation works started in the beginning of the twentieth century many remains were found and collected in the Pollentia monograph museum were they can be observed at the present time.One of the most visited spots of Pollentia is the forum, teh place for public life, where there also was the Capitoline Temple, a singular building dedicated to the imperial worship.

 

b. St. Ann’s chapel. 13th c. Alcudia.
The Chapel of St. Ann is situated 500 mts. away from the Roman town, nearby the Roman theatre. The chapel is an interesting hermitage in Romanesque style dating back to hte 12th century.

 

c. Parish church of Saint Jaume. Alcudia.
It is a small cathedral forming part of the defence wall of the city. It has one of the biggest rose window all over the island and still keeps the medieval belfry.

 

d. The walls. Alcudia.
In 1248, King Jaume II raised the walls once surrounded all the old town of Alcudia in order to prevent pirates from attacking the city. Nowadays only two gates of the walls survive. St. Sebastià’s gate and Xara’s gate.

 

e. Ca'n Torró's library. 15th c. Alcudia.
One of the best renaissance civil architecture samples is ca’n Torró. Ca’n torró is an ancestral home of the 15th century. Today is used as sociocultural center and houses the trendiest library on the island.

 

f. Can Fondo. Alcudia.
The most outstanding feature of this building is its coat of arms, the oldest yet known.

 

g. Casal de Can Domènech. Alcudia.
The façade of this ancestral home stands out for a coat of arms from the Aragon kingdom. Formerly, it was placed in the gate of Majorca.

 

h. Ca’n Picafort’s church. Ca’n Picafort.
On the most elevated area in Ca’n Picafort old town we find this church on the top of a rocky surface.

 

Museums.

 

Pollentia monograph Museum. Alcúdia.
Located in an old hospital from the 14th c.,this museum is based on the knowledge of customs and way of life in Pollentia through the objects recovered in the aerchological excavations. It stores a great catalogue of pottery, working and home tools as well as jewels and garnishment objects made of bronze and bone, all in all means the high refinement and cultural standard Pollentia reached.

Foundation created in 1993 to promote painting, sculpture and all the art in general.

Traditional feasts almost always religious, are the most predominant all over the islands. These are the most representative:

 

- 16th of January: Festes de Sant Antoni Abat (Alcúdia)

 

- 29th of June: Sant Pere’s feast (Alcudia harbour)

 

- 1st and 2nd of July: Festes de la Mare de Déu de la Victòria (Alcudia)

 

- 25th of July: Sant Jaume (Alcudia)

 

- 26th of July: Sant Crist’s Parade (Alcudia)

 

- 24th August: Festa de les llanternes (Alcúdia)

 

- First sunday of September: Festa de la Mare de Déu de Santa Anna (Alcudia).

 

- First weekend of October: Market, agricultural show, hand-made articles, industrial and trade fair.

 

- 15th august: Day of th Virgin (Ca’n Picafort).

 

- Market days in Alcúdia: Every tuesday and every sunday.

 

- Market day in Platja de Muro: Every saturday.
